Randomly thinking and sharing. Gratitude.

Posted by Bob Merrick under Friends, Music, music to read by

I was having a bunch of random thoughts this morning. Many of which seemed most appropriate for Twitter, but none were as short as 140 characters. Perhaps I have finally decided I have more to say than the limitations of Twitter, or perhaps I was just too tired and lazy to creatively make it articulate and succinct.

That being said, I woke up incredibly grateful this morning. I wanted to share that. I have no idea why. There was nothing different about this morning than even last night when I lowered my head to my pillow. But for some reason, the gratitude was swollen in my chest and I wanted it to be known. I am never one to question the feeling of gratitude, but I am just, dare I say, grateful, when it happens.

I felt grateful for my lover, my dog, my friends, my new car, my job, even my new iPad as I pulled into Starbucks to treat myself to a little coffee for the commute that I have learned to embrace instead of loathe.

On the cover of USA Today was one of my friends, Octavia Spencer, declaring that the movie The Help will be her breakout role. I couldn’t be more excited and proud of her. She is one of the naturally funniest and kindest people I know and is matched by her humble dignity.

Making for a bittersweet moment, another of my friend’s photo appeared in the upper left corner under the topic of heartbreaking and unfortunate news. Gavin DeGraw was, from what I have heard and have been able to piece together, attacked while walking home late Sunday morning in a random act of violence. It is a sobering reminder of the world we live in and that there are people who walk this earth with such tortured hearts that they only know cruelty and darkness. I am grateful to know that he is alright, but empathetic to the timing for he and his fans as he readies his new album for release next month. I am holding him tight in my thoughts and asking you do the same. (**UPDATE: I am happy to sayI heard from Gavin this morning and he is indeed, “on the mend”.)

I love my new Prius, but I keep forgetting to turn it off when I get out of it. Does anyone else have that issue?

I was wondering, does typing on your iPad count as texting if you were to get pulled over? Not that I was doing it, just curious what you thought.

One of my favorite movies of the year is a little documentary called Buck. If you have the chance to see it, I highly recommend it. Much like last year’s favorite movie of mine, Temple Grandin, where we were shown the relationship between humans and animals through autism, this time we are shown more specifically how we connect and behave through a man named Buck Brannaman and his relationship with horses. I have no idea why, but the movie’s Twitter feed wished me a wonderful Wednesday this morning. I am happy to take it. And in my gratitude, I wish the same for everyone reading this as well…

I have a handful of new songs I am loving and wanted to share them in hopes you might return the favor and help me discover some of yours.

One of the best things about hosting my weekly internet show is getting to connect with people from all over the country.  I think people connecting with people is one of the greatest human cravings and when we satisfy that hunger, great things can happen!

As my show was first launching, some mutual fans connected me to a band called The Iveys. They are a three part family unit (one brother and two sisters) out of Texas that have perfected what I like to refer to as “California Country” (think The Eagles or Crosby, Stills and Nash or even the new discs from Ashley Arrison and Josh Kelley). Arlen’s vocals are coated with a perfect layer of Rob Thomas, while the powerful harmonies from Jill and Jessica result in a Lady Antebellum / Fleetwood Mac marriage.

Last Friday, they played their first ever show in Los Angeles at The Mint and I was there front and center, bouncing my head and smiling like Carol Brady watching her kids perform as The Silver Platters. Their set was tight and their harmonies in sync. They’re professional and polished beyond their years and played the room full of drifters the same as if it were a packed house of fans. I keep saying that if I were given my own television talk show, they would be my first choice to hire as my house band. Their musicianship, passion for what they’re doing and positive energy are infectious and is near impossible not to connect with when you see them on stage doing their thing. And isn’t connection what it is all about?

Be sure and check out their website: TheIveysMusic.com and download their CD on iTunes (seriously, it is only $8!). The couple of dollars you spend means a lot to them, so you are supporting an awesome band as well as some well-deserving dreamers, not to mention you get a great new collection of music! You can also listen to my interview with them just below their music video for Back When It Was Our World.
